Accidents

According to one very reliable source, these things happen in America every single day:

240 people die as a result of medical errors
144 people die as a result of an accident at home
130 people die as a result of a traffic accident
110 people die as a result of accidental poisoning
62 people die as a result of a fall
49 people die victims of a homicide
28 people die victims of a drunk driver
9 people die as a result of drowning

Maybe we can learn something from these numbers. They say that doctors bury their mistakes so maybe that is still true? Perhaps people should really watch where they are going to avoid being victims of accidents? People should learn how to swim or wear life jackets always? Don't hang around people who might kill you? Don't put strange stuff in your mouth and maybe, just maybe, you won't poison yourself? Nobody dies as a result of starvation so I guess that's a good thing.

Swine

From a Yahoo! News story: "JERUSALEM – The outbreak of swine flu should be renamed "Mexican" influenza in deference to Muslim and Jewish sensitivities over pork, said an Israeli health official Monday. Deputy Health Minister Yakov Litzman said the reference to pigs is offensive to both religions and "we should call this Mexican flu and not swine flu," he told a news conference at a hospital in central Israel. Both Judaism and Islam consider pigs unclean and forbid the eating of pork products." If this suggestion is not dumb I don't know what is. Is mad cow disease to be renamed because Hindus consider cows to be sacred and they might be offended by the term? The swine flu is so named because it is carried by pigs. Stay away from pigs. And stay away from mad cows. Please. Anyway, I don't think Mrs Clinton cares one way or the other.

Old Age remedies 2

From an article on Yahoo!: “New research reveals that two of the most boring-sounding personality traits can actually help you live a healthier, happier and longer life. It turns out that people who are ambitious and disciplined live up to four years longer than more impulsive folks. A study from the University of California at Riverside found that conscientious types--the kind of people who have their nose to the grindstone and always pay their bills right on time (or early!)--are more likely to have stable relationships and are less tempted by health-dampening drugs, alcohol and other risky behaviors. People who were less conscientious were 50 percent more likely to die at any given age, on average, than those who were highly conscientious. Order and achievement were the top two traits associated with having a long life, but that doesn't mean that you have to be a snooze to reach the ripe old age of 100. "Conscientious does not mean boring or humorless," said lead study author Howard Friedman. Want to boost your conscientiousness? Surround yourself with friends who are good influences and consider investing in a day planner or an online calendar to stay organized.” How about people who take Yahoo! articles seriously? This woman looks like she’ll live to be 99.

Old Age remedies

This is a picture of Bettie Paige when she was young and beautiful. She used to be a pinup model and a centerfold. She's dead now. She died recently at age 85. She was probably quite wrinkled and frail. It's nothing to be ashamed of but we should also not try to put a pretty face on old age - old people are not attractive and they certainly are not healthy. Old age is a curse. A big one. You die after that. People forget about you. There is no use in calling old age the "golden years" and the age at which wisdom is acquired - baloney. 99% of old people will trade you their wisdom for a young and healthy body any day. You can take acai berries and yogurt and vitamins and goji juice and ginseng and green tea and anything else you want. There's nothing wrong with that, nothing at all, but you will still get old and weak. Until there's a cure, stay as healthy as you can - please. Good luck.

EASIYO and Lilli Ewing

Now hear this: "The food we eat, the life we lead, illness and the ageing process can all disrupt our internal balance. Eating freshly-made EASIYO yogurt every day could really help. EASIYO is Nutrient-dense. For relatively few calories, freshly-made EASIYO yogurt is full of protein, calcium and essential vitamins and minerals to help provide the elements for growth and a good constitution." I got this from their own advertisement. I had never heard of this yogurt brand since I buy mine at Wal-Mart - it looks mighty interesting. Look Lilli Ewing up on MySpace and get yourself motivated to exercise, too. You will be very glad you did. A good diet and lots of exercise - what more do you need? Money?

Work it Out

Work is movement. Don't be inert. Just move. Even rich people work - most of them anyway. Paloma Picasso may not need the money but she has worked practically all her life - she needs to work. She will forever be known as the daughter of the famous painter but she works anyway. She does not paint - she designs stuff like jewelry and perfumes and fashion accessories. Learn from her example. She's fifty nine and still working.

What bad economy???

I get out quite a bit. I see places - I hear stories - I read stories - I meet people. Every single day. From all accounts, the economy isn't doing well but I don't believe that at all and neither should you. Someone is trying to fool us. I see stores packed with customers. There are long lines everywhere. I see customers buying big ticket items. I see lots of people at banks - depositing big chunks of money. Every single day. I see that concerts with very expensive tickets get sold out. I see sporting events being filled to capacity. I see restaurants packed with people having a good time. Where is the bad economy the media is talking about???? NOT HERE, that's for sure.

Acai Berries

Be careful with the ad for Acai Berries. It's a good deal if you're getting the bottle for shipping cost only, but read the fine print. You might even be charged just $1.00, as I was. However, if you don't cancel within the fourteen day trial period, your card will be charged for one month's supply which will be shipped automatically - about $90.00. That's a forty five day supply for $90.00. If it works as well as they say, maybe it will be worthwhile - that's $2.00 per day. Good luck and good health to you.

Diet tips from Yahoo!

Granola Bar: 200 calories15 g sugars - Eat this instead! 1 oz cheddar cheese with Triscuits: 150 calories 5 g sugars -- Yogurt with Fruit on the Bottom: 190 calories 30 g sugars - Eat this instead! Plain yogurt with fresh fruit mixed in 110 calories 15 g sugars - Pass on these over-sweetened yogurt cups; they contain as much sugar as a soft drink. Almost all of that comes directly from the “fruit,” which is swimming in high-fructose corn syrup. Yogurt and fruit can be a great way to start your day, but do it yourself by mixing a cup of nonfat plain yogurt with a half cup of mixed berries. - Bagel with Cream Cheese: 700 calories 40 g fat 13 g saturated - Eat this instead! Cheese omelet 425 calories 18 g - 6 g saturated - Bagels are bogus. The bread is bad enough, containing 300 calories and 60 grams of carbohydrates, but tack on the liberal cream cheese schmear (by our survey of popular breakfast chains, up to 4 ounces for a single bagel!) and your "harmless" breakfast sandwich weighs in as worse than a Whopper. The omelet swap will save you nearly 300 calories, plus provide a surge of metabolism-boosting protein. And a recent study from the University of Connecticut found that eating eggs can help raise HDL (good) cholesterol. Dried Fruit: 175 calories 45 g sugars. Eat this instead! Fresh fruit, like an apple or a peach 70 calories 15 g sugar. OK, so dried fruit won’t totally derail a day of good eating (unless you down the whole bag of banana chips), but it’s far from being a harmless snack. First, because the dehydrating process sucks most of the volume from the fruit, you can eat cups of the stuff, and 600 calories later, still not feel any fuller. More troubling, though, is the fact that Sun-Maid and Ocean Spray add sugar to the fruit, making Craisins closer to candy than Mother Nature’s original intention. The choice is clear: Stick to the original, straight from the tree. Fish Sandwich: 600 calories 30 g fat 11 g saturated. Eat this instead! Grilled chicken sandwich 300 calories 13 g fat 4 g saturated. Fish is good for you, except when it’s battered, fried, robed in cheese, and bathed in tartar sauce. Even the biggest star can be sabotaged by the supporting cast. To this end, avoid any menu item with the word "crispy," the restaurant industry’s favorite euphemism for “fried.” Make sure your next fish or chicken sandwich is grilled, dressed with fresh produce, and topped with a low-cal barbecue sauce, or even ketchup and mustard. And watch the salt; Stick margarine (1 Tbsp): 100 calories 11 g fat 2.5 g saturated 2.5 g trans fat. Eat this instead! Whipped butter (1 Tbsp) 50 calories 6 g fat 1.5 g saturated. In their haste to remove saturated fat from butter, margarine makers created the margarine monster — a dangerous lipid called trans fat, with more dangerous links to heart disease than saturated fat. Pick up whipped butter instead; by whipping air into the spread, manufacturers decrease the caloric density of a tablespoon of butter, and they make it easier to top your toast. If you buy margarine, make sure it’s the type found in the tub, hopefully with an added bonus like omega-3s folded into the mix.

Marketing 101

Sometimes, the only thing that will draw a crowd is something truly remarkable or outlandish. A dog with the head of a cat. Or a cat with six legs. Marketing is not as easy as it looks. One never knows what the public will like. One sure thing there is - pretty women. They are ubiquitous. You see them on magazine covers, billboards, newspapers, the internet, etc. Of course, if you own a bar, hire the most attractive female bartenders you can. You can't go wrong, unless the competition does that too. Here's a bartender dressed for the occasion, but without customers. Maybe the bar hasn't opened yet. Who knows?

Nice diet foods

An article by someone who knows these things listed five foods which are supposed to help your diet along. They are, in no particular order: GREEN TEA, POMEGRANATES (full of anti-oxidants), ASPARAGUS (great digestive aid), PINE NUTS (appetite suppressant), and MILLET (or whole, non-processed grains). This person's good advice was to avoid white rice and pasta. He also suggested other healthy foods to eat on a regular basis: whole grains, chicken, fruit, and lentils. Good luck.

Diets

Dieting is a touchy subject for many people. I have an opinion about diets - no matter what diet plan you are talking about, I probably disagree with it. This may sound simple-minded, but it's my honest opinion. If you eat more than you need to, you will gain weight. If you spend more than you earn, you will go broke. Same difference. As for diet plans - don't complicate your life if you want or need to lose excess pounds. Just eat less, and eat less fatty and starchy food. If you need a gimmick that will allow you to eat less, simply talk more at the table. If you talk, you will spend less time filling your mouth with food. Also, eat all the vegetables and drink all the beer (or whatever) first. It works and I can prove it. My proof is all those pictures one sees on TV of starving people in remote places where food is really scarce. Why do you think none of them are overweight? Nothing to eat. That's my best guess.
