News and more news

Ladies and gentlemen: NPR announced that an 8.9 magnitude earthquake had struck Japan this morning. I was just getting up. The quake was a strong one. It created a scary Tsunami which even touched the western coast of the USA. The odd thing about all this is that the NPR news team announced it in a very matter-of-fact manner, as if nothing out of the ordinary had happened. It did not indicate anything close to the davastating effect this would have on Japan and other countries. I don't think they knew how deadly it was. One other thing - the day 911 happened, the same type of news update was given. One could not tell - from the announcer's initial broadcast - how serious an attack it would turn out to be. Sometimes, we just don't know. Protector

Construction business

As you know - I'm sure you do - many businesses sometimes benefit from the urgent needs of others. Doctors do, nurses, paramedics, ambulance services, funeral homes - you get the picture. A business that is sure to be in demand is construction and all construction suppliers. Why? It seems to me that destructive earthquakes and floods are becoming more and more numerous. The more they destroy, the more rebuilding needs to be done. Food suppliers also make extra money after disasters, especially when crops are destroyed. A word to the wise as they say.

California' s trouble

From a story on the internet: “WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The White House on Tuesday dashed hopes that the federal government would help California overcome a mammoth budget crisis that has brought the state dangerously close to an economic meltdown, saying the state will have to solve the problem on its own. "It's obviously not an easy time for the state of California," White House spokesman Robert Gibbs told a briefing when asked if the administration would provide emergency financing for the state. "We'll continue to monitor the challenges that they have, but this budgetary problem unfortunately is one that they're going to have to solve," Gibbs said.” Pity the State of California. Perhaps as long as it doesn’t fall into the Pacific Ocean when the next earthquake hits, all is not lost. This woman does not care all that much - she doesn't live in California.

Hurricane IKE

I have never experienced a hurricane or a tornado or a volcano eruption - only a small flood, two minor earthquakes, and one giant snowstorm. Nature, when it gets violent, has a way of scaring people. The energy unleashed is really of a huge magnitude. Just get out of the way if you can. It's for your own good. There's a difference between being brave and being foolhardy. I have a funny feeling Houston is about to be destroyed, though I hope not. Good luck.
